Outline

Current LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methods present important limitations and gaps, including:

• Lack of reasoning and decision support capabilities, such as exploring “what if” scenarios for the evaluation of alternative design options and devising adapted strategies, thus promoting active control of buildings and districts.

• Lack of alignment with domain models, e.g. BIM (Building Information Modelling), GIS (Geographical Information Systems), and LCA data structures.

• Lack of full support of temporal information, including sensor network data, to address maintenance, operation, deconstruction, disposal and recycling stages.

The proposed Doctoral research addresses the challenge of leveraging digital built environment resources, including Semantics, Internet of Things, and Artificial Intelligence. The aim is to deliver a new generation of life cycle assessment methods and tools that are model-based, continuously learn from real-time data, while informing effective operation and management strategies of buildings and districts.

The research will be conducted in a successful research group led by Prof Yacine Rezgui based in the school of Engineering.

The successful PhD candidate will be immersed in a supportive research environment and will acquire state-of-the-art knowledge in the semantic web of things domain, at the intersection of semantics (including BIM), Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet of Things.

What is funded

Tuition fees at the home/EU rate (£4,407 in 2020/21) and an annual stipend equivalent to current Research Council rates (£15,285 stipend for academic year 2020/21), plus support for travel/conferences/consumables.

This opportunity is available to home, EU or intenational candidates.

International applicants must be able to self-fund the difference between the Home/EU and Overseas fees (£20,950 per annum in 2019/20) each year. Please indicate how you will cover this in your application.

Eligibility

Candidates should hold or expect to gain a first-class degree or a good 2.1 (or their equivalent) in Engineering or a related subject.

Desirable skills include: Energy modelling, machine learning and computer programming.

Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the English language (IELTS 6.5 or equivalent)
